The Continuing Medical Education (CME) at the Neurology Unit of UPM’s Teaching Hospital (HPUPM) is a weekly session held for the Medical Officers and Specialists to meet and discuss various topics from case studies to clinical diagnosis for lifelong learning within the Unit.
On the 11th of September, the Unit themed this week’s session as ‘Neurofeedback’ had invited the Malaysian Society for Music in Medicine (MSMM) to present as well as to reconnoitre collaborations in future. This successful network was initiated by Professor Johnson Stanslas from the Department of Medicine, who is also a founding member of MSMM. The terrific session was sponsored by Dan Medik, a medical device company that has distributed and provided support services to the Unit for over a decade, also demonstrated the Neurofeedback apparatus prior to our presentation.
The welcome note and introduction was presented by the President of the Society, Dr. Geraldine Law, who went on to graciously thank everyone who effortlessly dedicated their time in making this event a success. Her speech on the overview of the Society was insightful and aspiring for future collaboration with the Neurology Unit in the near future.
Representing the MSMM was Mr. CK Ng who gave a humbling talk featuring his personal journey dwelling into non-traditional healing methods to various therapeutic sounds for clinical diagnosed illness such as Alzheimer’s to general wellbeing. A total of 25 participants, comprised of Neurologists, medical personals, music educators, academic lecturers from sound engineering to language, researchers, scientists, and students mainly from UPM cleared their Friday morning to attend this event, which was held at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Medical Library.
He shared his experience and observation of the Neurofeedback trainingthat was offered in a facility in Singapore. The outcome was fascinating, where he noticed significant improvements of memory and cognitive functions after several sessions. In the 40-mins talk, Mr. CK succeeded to impart fundamental science and application of various sounds used in healing throughout time.
