Promoting Our Event: The Music and Wellbeing Festival 2018

The Music and Wellbeing Festival 2018 is being organised for the very first time by the Malaysian Society for Music in Medicine (MSMM), jointly with the International Music House (IMH) Kuching.

This festival is unique as it is a confluence of a gamut of practices in music, including sound and dance movements used for stress management, mental wellbeing, and healing. The Music and Wellbeing Festival which will take place from the 11th to 12th March 2018 will be held at the Sarawak Islamic Information Centre in Kuching, Sarawak.

This festival aims to bring together educators, individuals who work with children and adults with special needs, medical practitioners, music enthusiasts, parents, academics and students who are interested in the field of music and wellbeing to meet, discuss, explore and experience how music can be used to restore and enrich one’s wellbeing and quality of life on a whole.

The Music and Wellbeing Festival 2018 is sponsored by the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) and supported by the Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA).

Speakers Profile

  Dr. Indra Selvarajah – Equipping and empowering Malaysian youth through music
A PhD qualified medical music therapist (NICU certified) from Florida State University, USA, registered with the American Music Therapy Association (MMTA). Dr. Indra is the Founding President of the MMTA, and has been lecturing at University Putra Malaysia for the past 17 years teaching courses in music therapy, music psychology, music and child development and music therapy in senior adults’ care. A passionate advocate for musical empowerment and equipping in the community, Dr. Indra spearheaded UPM Music Cares: Music Therapy & Autism Seminar (2015), Malaysia Music Cares (2016), Music in Me (2017), and is currently leading UPM-Toyota Music Strong, a music in mental health youth engagement project, a joint partnership between UPM and Toyota Asia Pacific.
Ms. Mahisha Naidu – Dance movement therapy for mental wellbeing
A registered Dance/Movement Psychotherapist and trained at the Goldsmiths College of London, Ms. Mahisha has worked with various populations including schizophrenic patients and children with learning, social, and behavioural difficulties. As a trained Indian classical dancer herself, she presents the power of movement for self expression when words aren’t simply enough.
  Datin Dr. Ang Kim Teng – Stress and mental wellbeing
A public health specialist with interest in mental health, Dr. Ang has held various positions in the Ministry of Health before retiring as the Selangor State Health Director in 2008. She continues to be actively involved in community work, serving the Malaysian Mental Health Association as its past President and current Secretary General and is a member of the National Mental Health Advisory Council. She is a regular speaker on mental health in public forums and conferences, Institutions of Higher Learning, and the corporate sector, inspiring others around her.
Mr. James Yeow – Music assisted relaxation for stress management
A passionate educator, who has a B.A. in music therapy and M.S. in counselling; Mr. James is a senior lecturer at HELP university who has conducted over 300 seminars for people from all walks of life including corporate companies such as Petronas and Jobstreet.
  Mr. Darien Nagle – Sound and it’s effect on the brain
An avid audiophile exploring the early days of digital, and later as a professional sound engineer, producer, and lecturer. He specializes in sound healing using solfeggio frequencies at different states of consciousness and continues to explore brainwave entrainment to achieve states such as Theta, as an alternative healing treatment for cancer.
Ms. Cheryl Mow – Music for special needs
A qualified and registered music therapist with the Australian Music Therapy Association and currently the secretary of the Malaysian Music Therapy Association. Ms. Cheryl works mainly with children and young adults with learning difficulties, privately, and in school settings. She also conducts workshops for various organizations on music therapy.
  Mr. CK Ng – The healing power of sound
Mr. CK is the founder of the Audio Engineer Society who is a pioneer in the development of Malaysia-Singapore recording industry has spent a lifetime journey in the music and recording business for South East Asia. He jet sets between San Francisco and KL sharing holistic healing with sound and music.
